Greg Landau, son of filmmaker, Saul Landau, is a music producer and educator who has travelled to Cuba 26 times since 1960 and led 9 tours there. He studied at the National Art School in 1968 and has been going back and forth since then. He has worked and studied in Cuba and has recorded 8 CD’s of Cuban music. He has collaborated with many of Cuba’s important artists and has a deep knowledge of Cuban history, culture and politics.

Arrive in Havana to a welcome dinner.

December 12, 2015 Saturday

Today we will go on a walking tour of Old Havana and have lunch in the one of the historic plazas.  After lunch we visit the  Bellas Artes Arte Contemporáneo with a guide, see the art of Revolutionary Cuba, one of the most amazing collections of art in Latin America.  In the late afternoon we will briefly visit a local Babalao ( a high priest of the Yoruba religion) to in Centro Havana and listen to rumba drumming.

In the evening (if you have energy)  we will have time to listen to music in one of Havana’s night clubs.

In the morning we will drive to Matanzas to visit the group Afro Cuba de Matanzas to hear several styles of Afro Cuban drum music played by this legendary band that has been active for over six decades.  After lunch we will visit the studios of a local artist and sleep at the beautiful beach at Varadero in an all inclusive resort.

December 14, 2015 Monday

After checkout we will drive south to Cienfuegos to visit the Pearl of the Caribbean. In the evening we will visit with the group Los Naranjos, one of Cuba’s oldest band that continues to play the traditional Cuban son.

Today we will drive to Santa Isabel de las Lajas to the home town of Benny More, we will put flowers on his gravestone and visit the Templo Congo where he was initialed in a local Cabildo Congo.  Then we will visit the Benny More museum and listen to local musicians. In the late afternoon we will visit the Centro Cultural Maroya and meet with local painters and artisans.

December 16, 2015 Wednesday

Today we will drive back to Havana to meet with local Cuban jazz musicians and learn about Cuban jazz. We will have the evening to visit local night spots.

In the morning we will visit Casa de las Americas, an important cultural center that has curated, promoted, collected and archived important works of Latin American art, literature and music. In the afternoon we will participate in the Jazz festival activities. Lots of music!!

Visit Afro Cuban Yoruba Museum in Havana and see the performance of a local rumba group. In the evening…more jazz.

This morning we will visit La Colmenita, a children’s theater group, an amazing ensemble that has toured the world. In the evening we will visit the Jazz Festival for more jazz and dancing.

Day independent study in Havana. Today you can plan your individualized outing such as a visit to local artisan markets, investigating old Havana, or a tour the Telephone Museum and Havana’s Chinatown.
